The 1997 – 2010 Ford F-150 and Expedition with 4.6L or 5.4L engine require extra care when changing spark plugs. Spark plug and cylinder head damage will occur if you do not follow this procedure precisely:
- Warm engine up. (warm, not hot)
- Remove ignition coils
- Soak spark plugs with penetrating lubricant
- Slowly work spark plug out. Loosen 1/4 turn, tighten 1/4 turn, Loosen 1/2 turn, tighten 1/2 turn, etc. until spark plug moves freely, then remove.
- Make sure to clean lubricant from spark plug threads
- Install new spark plugs
- Reinstall ignition coils
Keep in mind that this procedure should take under 2 hours. If procedure is not performed properly and you break spark plugs, it may take up to 10 hours. Openbay recommends that this repair always be performed by a professional.
